Rich people aren't like you and me -- not only do they have more money, but at least some of them have no souls: the latest fad for rich people who want green cred but don't want to give up the private plane and the summer home in the Hamptons is to purchase "carbon offsets" via organizations that make poor people in Third World countries engage in "cleaner" hard labor. For instance, making them replace irrigation machines that run on nasssty, nassssty fuel with what Megan McArdle calls a "hamster wheel." It's basically a contraption with pedals that people are supposed to manipulate to get water onto their fields.

I don't know how these wealthy enviroslugs do it -- I couldn't support such a thing and live with myself. The spiked article notes that the British penal system abolished a similar device once used for hard labor -- in fact, didn't Oscar Wilde have his health ruined by his sentence to the "treadmill"? It reminds me of that teacher I had in college who complained about roads being built in "pristine" remote areas of some place in South America -- the roads were for buses so the people of the region could be transported to their factory jobs; her complaint was that this was bad because "then they wouldn't get any exercise."

This is why I will continue to use Firefox: because for some reason some people out there think that I should be forced to look at their stupid ads. I attempted to go to a web site -- never mind which one, since it doesn't want me to look at it my way I don't want to give it any... free advertising, and I was redirected to the above-linked website, which contained the following absurd statement:

Software that blocks all advertisement is an infringement of the rights of web site owners and developers.

Now I have nothing against ads per se, but I am against being forced to look at ads I when I don't want to. I refuse to install another "approved" browser or open up Internet Virus Downloader. My life is not incomplete without viewing the website I was attempting to view. I can live without it.

But I tell you what -- I'm willing to make a deal. I will look at any ads these deluded website owners want me to look at -- for a fee: $100.00 per look, to be paid into my Paypal account. Please pay in advance.

Can I say this now: I never really cared all that much for Jody Foster. I always thought there was something creepy about her.

You know what? I really wish these actors would all move to Europe and leave us thuggish, rage and fear-filled Americans alone. Go! Go to Paris or Helsinki or wherever the hell you think you'll be "safe" from imaginary gun-toting American hordes.

Oh well ho hum, just another day of having a screen idol spit in the face of the people who made their success possible. Isn't that the American dream? To get rich and famous, and then tell everyone you had to be nice to that you didn't really like them anyway and oh by the way they smell?

In reading about the ongoing saga, as recounted by Kathy Shaidle, of how Catholics (at least in North America) are turning into Baptists without the fun, I think about all those Catholic artists of our lost, more confident past. Heck, even Andy Warhol was reportedly a devout Catholic. This is no way to get another Sistine Chapel, folks -- or even a picture of Campbell's soup cans.

Blog problems updates

The blogs are slowly being restored. I can now get to Victory Soap 2.0's login page, but I'm going to leave that alone until all the missing blog entries are re-connected from the database to the new location of the site. Tim Blair is operational, but the same thing needs to be done with the missing September 2nd posts -- they are on the database, but need to be restored to visibility manually. I'm not doing this -- the hardworking folks at Hostmatters are. I'm just doing laundry. If I get the urge to post I'll do it here in the meantime.
